Shieling Earth Skills Gathering

Oct 20 2023 AT 5 PM EDT –

Oct 22 2023 AT 5 PM EDT

165 Ochre Mill Rd. Weatherly, PA 18255

Building community in harmony with the natural world through the study of primitive skills

The Shieling Gathering is back for 2023 with a new vision and a new location. In order to make the price accessible to all, we have decided to move the gathering to RoundStone Camping Resort in Weatherly, PA. Because of our new venue arrangement, we will cap attendance at 25. The gathering this year is tent camping only.

Rather than the workshop-style schedule of previous years, this year's gathering will focus on sharing skills from one participant to another and practicing self-reliance in community. All participants are asked to share any skills they bring. Examples of past skills include matchless fire making, mushroom and plant identification, Russian martial arts, knot tying, open fire cooking, beekeeping and more. At night, we will still enjoy music and poetry around the fire.

All meals will be potluck style cooked around the fire. Bring whatever you'd like to eat for the weekend plus something to share around the fire.

Our site this year does not have potable water. Participants must bring their own drinking water.

Friday

Arrive any time after 5 pm to get your camp set up. Join us at the fire pit for s'mores at sundown.

Saturday

There will be three 2-hour workshops on Saturday. On Saturday night, we will have music and poetry around the fire.

Sunday

We will have one workshop Sunday  morning. After lunch, participants are free to practice skills, swim, or pack up camp.

ABOUT ROUNDSTONE CAMPING RESORT

165 Ochre Mill Road Weatherly, PA 18255

"RoundStone's 400 acres has been in the Grover family since 1887. Initially operating as an ochre mill, the land was mined for ochre, a clay pigment used in paint making.  The clay was transported via donkey and cart down the mountainside and taken to water turbines where it was ground with large round stones. It was then shipped by railcar to Philadelphia. The mill burned down in the 1930's but evidence of it still exists throughout the property today.

Jan Grover is the current owner of the RoundStone property.  His father, Captain Niles L. Grover, was a WWII bomber pilot as well as a commercial airline pilot. Upon his retirement, he and Jan's mother, Birte "Chris" Grover, dedicated their lives to maintaining the land and running a well known fishing club for many years.

Today, we offer our beautiful property to the campers here at RoundStone. "
